Three things every Maryland family should know about life insurance

Maryland taxes estates and inheritances

Maryland is the only state with both an estate tax and an inheritance tax. The state estate tax applies to estates over $5 million, a threshold that has not changed since 2019, and life insurance you own counts toward that total. For larger estates, who owns the policy is worth planning.

Name a person, not your estate

Maryland’s inheritance tax does not apply to life insurance paid to a named beneficiary. Proceeds payable to your estate lose that treatment and can also be tied up in probate. Naming people, plus a backup, keeps the money moving to your family.

Beneficiary forms beat wills

A life insurance payout generally goes to whoever is named on the policy, whatever your will says. After a marriage, divorce, birth or death in the family, check the beneficiary on every policy you own, including coverage through work.
